Trips July 10th to 20th

It looks like flows are still up. It has been a good season so far for the Lower Saint. Calgary rivers are finally dipping down to end their seasons. That means the middle fork of the flathead may end up as a good alternative for an easier paddle. As someone mentioned, the Swan is an awesome, if continuous ride. THe main fork of the Flathead down by Polson also shouldn't be missed.

OF course the usual standby are the Kootenay runs around Radium and Fort Steele. The lower Elk is also running, even if it may not be a favorite run for everyone. The Bull, especially the canyon is always fun, even at low flows. If you really want good water, consider the creeks by Golden. As most of those are Glacier fed, they tend to get pretty high on warm days.

I will be heading off to Whitehorse next weekend, so won't be around for a while.

Chris - have a good trip.

Lower St. Mary is now done - we put it to rest yesterday with a bony run on Hairpin - Birch wave & hole were still quite good even at low water.

We'll be in Fernie area for a while and if paddlerz want to run Elk, Bull or Wigwam, give us a call.

Seems I've missed a bunch of runs. That is what you get when you decide to go to school in the summer. No complaints just best wishes for your paddling season. Chris, if you feel generous when in whitehorse stop off at the Yukon Brewing Company (you are allowed in there) and bring me back a case of Arctic Red. I'll pay you when I get it. It won the international beer competition as the best red beer. Also if you want a great place to eat go to the Talisman Cafe 2112 2nd Ave in whitehorse. It is vegetartian but absolutely incredable. I will be doing Upper St. Mary Thursday evening or Friday morning. Anyone who is interested is welcome to come join us. We did it last Friday and turned an hour trip into three because of all the "little" surf holes. It was fun for us beginners and our not so beginner company.
The water level is dropping, but if you can handle the occasional scrape to the bottom of your boat, the lower water has some fun little features all on its own.
Happy paddling.

Mark, Preben, and anyone else interested,
W'ell probably take off from Cardston around 5:30 or 6:00 p.m. for the Upper St. I just need to get in touch with my brother on when he getes off work. Is there a time that works better for either of you? Hopefully we can solidify a time by later tonight.

We had a good run down the Upper St. Mary's on Thursday night. The water was warm for those who decided to do a little swimming. The level, about 20 cms, was OK but the usual play spots a bit on the low side for prolonged play. Still, it was a great evening. The mosquitos weren't bad on the river, but at the take-out there were swarms of the nasty critters.

Us "swimmers" loved that warm water on the Upper St., and the mosquitoes weren't too nasty. With very little coaxing, they were more than willing to carry us and our boats back up to the vehicles.

I know it is a little late to post, but a group of Cardstonites are heading out from my place (see previous comment) Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. Anyone and their bug spray is welcome to come.

Thanks Mark for teaching me some stuff, It was great fun and I look forward to doing it again. Next weekend I am going up to a 5peaks race in Kananaskis, the Delta lodge. The river is to be pretty good, the elbow river is not to far either. Anyone interested??? Red Deer River???

To further my suggestion of a Thursday evening paddle on the Upper St., I am thinking we could plan on being at the take out at Kimble River Sports about 5:30 sharp and head out from there. Flows are still hanging around 20 cms. Post here or call 320-8711.
