Trips Aug 20th to 26th

I have just gotten back from the Yukon. If anyone is interested in boating next week, post a comment. I was thinking of either heading down to Kalispell area for the Main fork of the Flathead (class III big water), and perhaps polson if it has any water (class IV+). The Flathead should be good for people who have been playing on the upper Saint. It is pretty much pool and drop even if the waves are big. That means Nathan should definitely quit painting for a day!

If that doesn't work, perhaps I will see who is up for Golden area rivers closer to the end of the week.

I was thinking Tuesday or Wednesday for Montana. If we did Golden, Thursday or Friday would work better.

Sorry to disappoint Chris, can't give up a day for paddling during the week... Not only that, I messed my leg up kayaking off of a spillway by Jensens Reservoir (fun story), and the splint is keeping me from fitting my leg into my boat for some reason. Hopefully, it won't hold me back for long.

My brothers and I are all up for some weekend trips on some class II or III stuff. By the by, are there any kayak courses being offered by the club this Fall? We have been working mostly with the "blind leading te blind" instruction method, and we are still all blind. There is one good word that describes our needs...HELP.

Happy paddling
Nathan

I'll have to get the full story. Doesn't sound too good. I think I should be able to run a course one weekend in September. Perhaps something on the Swiftcurrent or Middle Fork of the Flathead, or the Kan. How does the 2nd week of Sept (10th) sound?

I may also be interested in that course, if its on a saturday.

Chris,

Second week in September sounds like it may work well. I can probably get my two brothers, wife and myself there. We pretty much have every one hooked up with gear now. I just got my hinged brace, so I can fit my leg into my boat... In a couple of weeks it may not even hurt anymore.
Is there a cost to the course? Let me know, and I will give you exacts on the numbers (I know the Lows may be interested, but you probably don't want too crowded of a course).

My brothers are both in Lethbridge, and I am sure they want to sign up for memberships. What is the best way for them to sign up? With whom?

Hi,
My name is Linda and I'm searching for people to paddle with. I can paddle class 1-2 (prefer the 2's) and I'm not much of a playboater. Live in Calgary but travel to Lethbridge when I'm not paddling to visit family. Anyone free September 10 or Oct 1? E-mail me at lindaenglehart@hotmail.com

Popson Wave

In our never-ending quest for local paddling, after last week's rains we ran the Lower St. Mary from the airport bridge (quite boney) and then the Oldman to Lethbridge. There used to be an OK surf wave on the Oldman shortly below the St. Mary but it's virtually gone. In contrast, the 'Popson Wave' seems to have gotten better. Some boulders have fallen from the coulee face and contributed to the previous heap that forms a Grade II broken ledge feature. It has a few small wave/hole features that provided some entertainment. We expect that the feature would get better with higher water and with rock well above the current water, it shouldn't flush out until high flows (??). It's about 100 m upstream from the Popson Park boat launch (west Leth.).

Chris,

Nice to see you mentioned in the new issue of 'Rapid'!

Didn't know I was mentioned. I will have to have a look at it.

For the September 17th course, I will run it either on the middle fork of the flathead, or the lower Kananaskis. Participants should have paddled the upper st. mary's or equivalent river. The location will be determined a bit by who decides to come. I am still thinking through a few details. There may be a nominal fee for non exec (or people not planning on joining the exec), however, I will try to iron out details by this weekend.

Chris,

September 10th or 17th? You mentioned both, and I am up for either, but the date will determine the participation of some others that I know are interested.

Is there any chance that we may still use and abuse you for a pool session in Cardston? The pool closes on Aug 31st, but I may still be able to get us in later.

Thanks for being willing to take us greenies out.

We got spammed. We can try this word verification thing to prevent automated posts. What a pain.

Nathan, I will run the course on the 17th of Sept. That should be the last day of paddling for the season. I would like to run it on the Middle Fork of the Flathead at low water. I know the Kan is flowing, but I think West Glacier is closer to our area. It should be class II at these trickling flows. If the Swiftcurrent happens to be running, that will be the first choice.

About how long of a drive will it be from Cardston to the Middle Fork of the Flathead? I would like to go, but have to work around some things (like family).
