Trips July 28th to August 3rd

The summer is flying by, so take advantage of some of the paddling trips.

Upper St Marys has provided some fun trips over the past two weeks. Flows (17 cms) are great for begginers, and a couple of play spots provide a place for more advanced paddlers to practice skills as well. Just yesterday, a group of 10 paddlers enjoyed the Upper, some of whom had never paddled on a river before. Both they and more seasoned paddlers enjoyed some hole and wave surfing as well as a great sunset. All of the reports that I heard were positive. If those paddlers or any other ORCKA members are interested in this trip or any other trip, here is the place to leave your comments.

ORCKA has allowed us to store a couple of rental boats in Cardston for both Cardston members and convenient use for other members wanting to visit Upper St and area rivers. Janson is the man to contact for use of htese boats (Wave Sport T3 and Jackson 4Fun). You can also leave a comment under the trips postings as well.

There are a few of us driving from Calgary to paddle the Elk on Sunday. Water's getting low there but why not. :) Interested?

I really want to find a civic holiday Kicking Horse paddling partner. Know the river? Interested in taking me out?
Best wishes,

I'm interested in the Elk, but can't make a Sunday trip. If you go any other day, let me know. Thanks.

I haven't done the Kicking Horse and heard that it is continuous class III-IV. I would love to do it sometme soon. How long do flows stay up for it? I probably won't be able to go on any big trips until after the weekend of the 12th... I'll be itching to paddle by then.

KH is glacier fed. That's right, Sunday's - that's too bad. We should be at Elko by 9:30 am. We're tossing over the idea of doing the upper-lower in addition to the lower canyon.
Cheers!

KH is an intermediate/advanced run. The areas I'm interested in are the class 3-5 sections (very technical, big water, and a bombproof roll is necessary). It would be challenging and difficult to rescue an individual (although I have done the course). The water has come down and now it's low (so this is a good time to go out onto the river for the 1st time), but it changes all the time. This is just based on what I know. If you're confident and have ample class 3/4 experience then no worries, it'll be good. But I'm tied up til the last weekend in August now.

We're paddling the vermillion next Saturday if anyone is interested. There are no gauges for this river. Therefore, if the river is dry we'll keep driving past Radium to paddle Toby Creek (bridge down and take out above the 1st canyon of the wild and crazy 7 canyons). We're leaving Calgary at 7:15 am.

3rd weekend in August - Mistaya river (possibly Canyon but unlikely due to undercuts and hazards). Camping near Nordegg Saturday night. Paddling Saturday & Sunday. Doing the tourist thing at the icefields too. Denny's golfing (cause he doesn't paddle). If you're interested we're leaving Calgary at 7:30 am. There will be people camping 2 nights as well. Just not my husband and I.

Last weekend in August - KH & Toby Creek.

Best wishes,
Linda
