Hey Chris,

Actually George, Spenc, and Cooper are going to be leaving lethbridge Saturday morning for anyone wanting to hit up the upper st. Mary's. its got alot of really good surfing right now with the higher flows. Its alot of fun. if you want to get a car pool going for Saturday call George at 634-5801. I am already in Cardston so I am going to meet the Lethbridge crew in front of Dairy Queen at about 9:00 a.m.

just so people know... We have been reading the WRONG meter for upper St. Mary's. The section nearest Cardston was reading measurments from the section of river closest to the border. But after all the tributaries it rises considerably. the the readings are now correct for the area nearest Cardston. what we once thought was 50cms was actually 80cms.

Excellent point. The Highway 501 gauge is right below the bridge by Kimball River Sports (the grey metal shack). It's closer and thus better.

Ab. Env. has a new website for river flows, and revised pages for reservoir operations.

Here's the page for the St. Mary Dam and River system. Note that the spillway has just opened a bit (10 cms spillway + 5 cms through turbine = 15 cms release). The reservoir is only 60% full but Waterton and Oldman are full and every day of cool, wet weather brings reduced need for irrigation water.

We need more Clay-paddling days.

I will still be in Cardston for a few days so if anyone wants to paddle upper St. let me know.

I just updated the top link on the flows links. It is now the map of the oldman sub basin area and where each river reading is at. hopefully this helps people. thanks for the link stew.

Thanks - Stew, I picked up a copy in Calgary just this weekend.

It was fun to see. I gave the author your name. He was thinking of doing a longer border runs issue for some of the US mags.

That could be an interesting article. I know I have a few stories of Simon (New Zealand) and his friend trying to make the Siyeh border run. Combine some of these with some of the press on the North Fork of the Flathead (see Canadian Geographic), some history of Joe Cosely running his furs from Belly River over to Churchill after getting nabbed for poaching while he was working as a warden, and you could have an interesting story.

I am sure there are a few more border runs around. We have the St. Mary's, and I am sure there are others.

Good weather and good flow. We'll run the upper St. Mary mid-day (Mon). 11 am at Lethbridge Costco or noon at Cardston DQ.

Hello,

Is anyone interested in leading a beginnner/novice paddle this weekend (14/15) assuming other beginner/novice paddlers want to come out? Alternately, is anyone interested/willing to allow me to tag along on a paddle and to provide me with advice/coaching? I have a good roll and have experience in whitewater (Class II+) but definitely need more practice.

Hopefully we can organize this early in the week because I would need to organize a boat rental as well.

I will monitor the blog comments or you can give me a call (327-0050).

Thanks,

Aaron

Aaron you should have been coming with us on the upper St. Mary's it has been alot of fun!
Saturday would be a perfect day for me to get out and paddle. So gp ahead and rent, and whatever happens, we will make sure that we get out with whomever decides to come out with us. So if anyone is interested in a Saturday kayaki trip let us know. If you have any prefferences of where you would like to go to let me know and we can decide.

for new photos of recent upper st. Mary's trips taken by Janson, and you were on the river when I was snapping shots. take a peak on the wiki site from ORCKA...

please let us know if you would like to be added to the wiki site to add your own photos and videos of local paddlers.

Call us and arrange times for pick up and drop off. we need to be present for both the pick up and drop off. thanks... and stay on the blog for any further updates for this weekend!

I'm up for a weekend paddle and so is Corry (he's from Medicine Hat).

Janson, did you decide on a river and a time?

Anonymous said...

We would like to paddle this weekend too. A Class II run would be perfect. (Belly, Crowsnest, Oldman, highwood, sheep...)
Jollin, Claudia and Brad.

K so I think I have a couple possible good options.
1. Crowsnest river below the falls, but take out further down the river instead of at the gravel road bridge, then if we have time we could hit a quick run on the boulder section of the Oldman River.
2. Crowsnest River above Lundbreck Falls... Portage around the falls and take out at the Bridge or further down.
3. Belly River at West's property take out past the gravel pits.
either way we might want to leave Lethbridge around 8 a.m. so we can get in the river at a good time!
if you are IN call me on my cell at 894-7773.

I was wondering if anyone has an extra dry top they would be willing to lend me for Saturday.

Thanks,

Aaron

We are planning to meet at the Safeway Parking Lot on the West side at 8:00 in the morning. We will figure out who will drive and all the car pooling fun there at Safeway. So please be on time so we know who is coming. we are going to the Crowsnest area to paddle. (option 1 or 2). Call me if there is any questions or requests.

We just got back from the day's run. Wow, it started out a bit slow but I had a great time!

I ran the Lundbreck falls for the first time today. Let me just say, it really gets the heart racing! Also the landing really is as soft as you've heard, it's like landing on a cloud. I'm sure Janson has some video he'll be posting soon.
