September

The Upper St. Mary's river has actually been at a runnable level the last few days. The flow isn't high, but I think a run could still be fun. The water will be warm for sure!

So is anyone up for a run maybe Friday afternoon or Saturday morning?

Never mind, the flow is down again.

Is the river depth and flow decent in October? We'll be down for Thanksgiving and I wouldn't mind giving it a try if you and your group are available Oct 8-9.

The flow is too low normally at this time of year. There is little chance that the flow will be up to a runnable level again this year, but check the Upper St. Mary's flow on the main page. The flow needs to be 15 cms or greater to be worthwhile (in my opinion).

Upper St. Mary's is back in action, who knows for how long...

The Smith brothers and I are thinking about taking a trip on the Upper St. monday late afternoon. If anyone is intersted, they are more than welcome. We'll have more specifics later tonight.

The Lower St. Mary's has also reached a low, but runnable level. This probably won't last long...

I ran the Upper St this afternoon. It seemed higher than many of our late July and August paddles (Alberta Environment flow reports were 14.0-15.5 m3/s on the St at the 501 during the time I was paddling). There was only one spot where I got caught up on rocks. It wasn't a bad paddle at all, and the water was surprisingly not freezing. Some of the features were too small for much, but really I don't know what I am talking about anyhow. I am a beginner. The rain was a nice cool down, and there was plenty of wildlife out. It was nice to get out again.

Happy paddling/paddle dreaming.
