Trips June 9th - June 15th

It sounds like rain for the weekend. You're gonna get wet anyway, so why not have fun paddling in it?

I will be paddling Upper St. Marys Saturday morning with my bro and a beginner. It will be a great opportunity for those who are just learning some river-running skills to get some extra direction and practice on a fun class II river. If you are interested, leave a comment, and I'll get some more specifics for you.

Happy paddling.

Anyone headed out for a Lower St. Run this weekend? Flow on the Lower has been increased since the start of the rain. Might be fun to play on Rain wave for a while!

I could be easily persuaded to do a Lower St. run if we don't have other beginners interested in Upper St. for Saturday morning. What time are you thinking of going, Mark?

Scottg, are you referring to an Upper or Lower St run?

The lower is back up to 50 cms. That is a good flow for playing on some of the nice waves. My problem is that I have a bit of a back problem, so I will have to get out of my boat every 1/2 hour or maybe more often to do a little stretching. I have to check with my wife, but probably anytime Saturday would work.

Looking at the weather, there is no difference between the expected low and high for Saturday, plus rain is forcast for the whole day. My preference would be to go in the morning. Perhaps meeting at the put in at 8:30 or 9:00?? I would be fine doing just the first section and spending lots of time playing, or we could do the whole run. Either way we will have to deal with some mud on the way out. If its pouring, I don't think I'll be up to going, but I can handle a good drizzle.

if you're patient, i'll do either.
my rolling in the pool sessions was great, but i haven't been on a river since highschool.
i'll have to rent a boat too, hopefully we can get this arranged sooner rather then later so i can contact whoever.
Thanks
Scott

I am heading out to the sheep for Sat. I am not sure what section, but I imagine it will be the class IV stuff. Updates at calpaddle.

Rentals are through clayton hironaka. They are normally thursday pick up and monday return. 327-8722. He has a new baby, so I am not sure how flexible things will be.

You can always try out a boat from the boat shop in town as well.

Mark/Scott,

It looks like I will be going with my brother and a small group on Upper St. It's running at over 50 cms which creates some fun waves on the Blender and a fantastic wave just downstream from Double Trouble. We are planning on taking our time, playing and working on eddies, so it should be good for anyone who has the morning to play.

It'll be good to meet you, Scott, and it'll be good to see you again, Mark. We'll be meeting at Tim's (Kimball Riversports) at 9 am. Call if you have any questions... 330-9895 If you need to call, get me before 5:30 or leave a message. I'll be busy softening up my wife by taking her out to make her feel better about letting me paddle so often.

We'll see the brave ones tomorrow morning :-)

Scott, how long ago was highschool, and what level of river did you paddle then?

Also, are you heading out from lethbridge? We may be able to carpool.

Here is a link to a map from Kimball's own webpage.

I can also plan to be at Dairy Queen on Cardston Main Street at 8:45 to help drive you into the take-out if it would help. Let me know.

Hey
Highschool was 5 years ago, and to be honest, i can't recall what the levels were. Mostly using this trip to discover what level my skills are at.
Yes, i am going from lethbridge, carpooling would be great. here's my cell 315-0114. I'm hoping to be back home (and with my cellphone) by six.

I have another Upper St. run scheduled for Thursday at around 4pm with some friends. Anyone interested is welcome (good to have a little river experience).

Sorry I didn't make it Saturday. How was the run?

The flows were awesome. The blender was perfect for a good long surf, and the rain actually warmed things up a little. We had to give up on eddies after the first 1/3 of the run as some of our beginners were swimming a lot on the eddie lines... this slowed us down enough to get some of the group a little too cold. Everyone reported that they had fun, so I figure that a success.

When you're cold, that last stretch of river seems so long.... wait a minute.... It always seems long. Too bad there wasn't an earlier takeout.

We've learned to pass the time working on rolling, stern squirts, and paddling backwards. At these higher flows, the current pushes you through the last stretch quite quickly... you're done before you know it.
