Elk

Well the folks over at the Paddle Fernie website have been running the elk and bull so far. I guess that means the paddling season has started. Wilco also indicated that the landslide on the lower Elk has gotten even more filled in changing the line again.

Chris
I think I am going to bail on this weekend. Weather forcast is for plus 9 and 70% rain. Also river levels on BC side are still quite low. Around 27cms on Elk when we normally paddle it at around 65 or higher. Probably a good level for first paddle but long drive if cold. Nothing flowing on this side of divide yet. Call me a wimp, but I may simply catch a movie, sin city, the hostage, or be cool. Anyone interested?

The man of many choices. I'm back in. Thought about the wimpy thing. I need to get my butt out and destress. A good day on the river is probably just what I need. How about Saturday? I'll try calling on your cell Chris.

I will think about it. I had already packed my car, told Mark I would pick some stuff and and was thinking of which hike to do down in Glacier. I think the distance is about the same. I know the shuttle is definitely shorter on the swan, and there are burritos at the take out. Of course the rapids are a bit tough for a season opener. I will have to decide soon. I will be down in waterton for the afternoon, unless I take off early. 859-2452

My montana trip was nice. The water was still pretty low. The middle fork looks allright. The Swan had the usual 600 cfs of water being drawn out by the dam, making flows a very bony 700cfs. It was more like a class II run that the usual bang up of the mad mile.

I also checked out Logan creek. Again the flows were on the low side. It is a bony run. The upper mile that the guide book says is stout is fairly woody. The one nice drop has a river wide strainer just after a 4 foot pour over. The bottom section was allright. Higher flows could make this a very good run. I would say it was more of a class III run similar to the top of Carbondale, or more likely, like Alexander Creek in the Pass. It would be good for some introductory creeking.
