Trips June 28th to July 4th

It's coming up to the long weekend and the flows are still looking good. I am hoping to take off for a kick on the Upper Wildhorse (IV+ and very continuous and woody) Wed and Thur. I may also hit Hell Roaring falls after work one of the these days. For other trips, post your info here.

It looks like there is going to be another festival over by Castlegar

Looks like I won't be able to make it out on Friday. Canada day celebrations abounding with the family, plus yet more painting... Perhaps saturday or sunday I can make it out on the river.

I have a NEW Pyranha Micro 240, Pyranha's creeker from two years back. If anyone is interested, send me an email at ngtsmith@mac.com

If anyone is interested in doing Upper ST. Marys, I have been doing it at least once a week. Just let me know for any early evenings or weekends.

Interested in doing the Lower St. Run today wedn. When are you planning on being out there Stew/Di?

Nathan, I am also interested in your runs of the upper St. what days have you been going?

Mark,

We'll head out to be at the normal put-in at leaving town at about 12:30. We'll just do the Rain Wave surf run and bike back to the put-in from the A-frame.

Release flow is currently 30 cms and will probably be the same tomorrow. Flow at the Airport Bridge gauge is about a day or so behind the release. Thus, 50 cms at the gauge this morning was through Box Canyon yesterday. Probably our last and warmest splash on the lower St. Mary this year.

Home for early lunch at 320-9601.

Thanks Stew, I already talked to Di... I'm working this afternoon, so I won't be able to make it.

Anyone else out there interested in doing the same short run on the lower St. leaving town around 5pm?

Mark - I am hoping to get out Friday or Saturday to do the Upper St Marys. I haven't tried the Lower St Marys and would be up for that as well. My number is 634-6123 (p.s. I am a house painter if you ever get sick of all your painting :-))

Really nice level yesterday for Rain-Wave - warm water and hot weather - gotta like it. And next time somebody head's down you might walk upstream about 100 m from the normal put-in beach. There seems to be a fairly prominent hole there - you can see it easily from the parking spot at the coulee-top. We did run that reach a few weeks ago but at much higher water and we don't remember much there.

Not sure about flows - reporting steady 50+ cms at airport gauge but spillway releases have been dropping over the past few days - ??

Nathan - I am trying to get things set for a run on Saturday. If the lower is still flowing I'd like to run that. Are you into a little surfin'?

Mark - Saturday sounds good. I am just learning, so I might be into more watching than surfing. I'll give er a go though. Give me a call (# on previous post) cause I'll need directions.

Looks like problems with the flow gauge - it's been reporting about 51 cms for quite some time despite progressive cut-back on spillway release. We called the dam today and it's likely that about 30 cms will be released Fri. & probably over the week-end (same as past couple of days). Still a nice level but if it drops much lower it'll be time to go elsewhere.

We're heading out Friday just after noon for the Hairpin Run if anybody wants to come along. Maybe Windowshade will finally be small enough for us wimps to jump in.

Nathan, are you heading out from Lethbridge? Anyone else in for a run on Saturday? I Would like to leave Lethbridge around 10 or 11.

Another paddling option will start next week - the 'Mad Mile' of the Swan from the Dam to Bigfork Montana (near Kalispell). It's short but pretty busy with fairly continuous III-IV and a couple of should-miss holes. There's been an agreement with the relicensing of the hydro project on the river to release water Wed.'s from 5 to 9 pm through most of July & Aug.. Associated with this test release program there's even free beerz for paddlerz at the Garden Bar in Bigfort a short walk from the take-out. Top release off Swan Reservoir so it's warm. If you haven't run it yet, do it this summer. Or as Don P. knows, its actually not the Swan River but instead the Swam River.

Sorry, Mark, I won't be able to do the Lower St. Marys on saturday. There are a couple of people meeting at Kimball river sports Friday @ 4 for a quick Upper St. trip (if anyone is interested). I wish I could do the Saturday thing, but I'll have o go another time.

Hey Nathan, no problem. I may still head out and do a short run anyway. I'd like to head out today for the Upper St. Run, but we have company for supper.
