April 29 to May 16th trips

Here is the spot to post comments to find other members interested in heading out on the water. Remember, while exec members may be keen on whitewater that others may not, put up a comment, many members are interested in finding like minded individuals for Class I. II kayak and canoe trips.

May 14th I am hoping to hit Dutch Creek or Horsethief or even the Wild Horse (Class IV creeks). If those aren't flowing then the Bull and or Skook would be good. Of course I will have to see if I can't get in shape somehow for those first runs. Perhaps that will mean a quick jaunt out to the Kan or what ever else is flowing on the week of the 7th.

WIth the nice weather this week, I am going to do the upper St. Mary's (class II). The water will be low, so it should be more a get in shape run than anything else. Ronna has said she will come, and Kris Anderson is a maybe. I would suggest meeting next to Dairy Queen as close to 4:30 as possible.

While it is mother's day the Sunday, I will see if I don't go for a run on the Kan Sunday afternoon.

What day are you thinking of for the Upper Saint for this week?

Wednesday afternoon.

Contemplating heading out from Lethbridge shortly after 3:30pm on Wednesday to meet up with Chris at the Cardston DQ. Anyone interested in carpooling? We could meet at the Costco parking lot. Chris, could you post tomorrow (Wedn.) to confirm that you are going?

Confirmed. Ronna may also be going 315-9149

Flows are looking pretty low. I think they must have just started to pull out some water on the irrigation cannals. It is down to 12cms. I think that means we should take a good look at it before heading down. 15cms is getting about as low as one can go.

I'm out for the Upper St. run for Wednesday. Flows look too low, and some family sickness helped me to decide.

I am out too then. Sorry Call me at my cell 653-7447 for questions

I'm making a prediction that the lower St. is going to run this year. Anyone have any definate information saying that its not going to run? I looked at the reservoir level over the past 3 years. In 2003, the reservoir level dropped over the course of the summer to about 5m which is much much much lower from what appears a normal post runoff level of about 25m. So in 2004 it looks like most of the runoff needed to be retained. Looking at the level of the reservoir right now compared to the level in 2003 makes me think there is a good chance the lower will be running at some point this spring, especially when you contrast the level this year to last year post runoff level. Anyone have any comments??

I would guess not. I would assume they are maxing out the volume due to the low snowpack. Anything they put out qould quickly get used up by irrigation

I am going to go with Chuck's group one day. I think it is going to be Wednesday, although I have to confirm that with him. I would be into the uper run any day. It will depend when my parent's furniture comes for their house. I will be helping my dad move things around a bit.

I'd guess that the St. Mary Dam won't spill this year. Snowpacks are quite shallow and the major SMRID reservoirs are currently about 75% full so there's capacity to trap water as well as divert offstream.

The key unknown is spring rains. A couple of years ago flow forecasts were very low and there was even planning for irrigation rationing and then rains hit and we had great paddling.

Anybody know any good rain-dances?

Seems that the canals are full and flowing as of today as well. I am still hopefull!! I'd join in on the rain dances! Perhaps we will still get a bunch of the snow that was missed this winter up in the hills.

Anyone up for a run on the Upper St. either Thursday or Friday maybe meeting at Cardston at 4:30 or so?

Today (Thursday) seems good to me. Blair Goates from waterton is interested too. Give me a call 653-1547 if anyone is interested

What time are you thinking would work for you today Chris?

chris g said...

Being a teacher I can get off at 3:30 as long as I am a good boy. Any time after that is fine. How about if you suggest the meeting time iin Cardston. Blair will confrim plans at 2:00.

Meet at the Alternate School across from DQ in Cardston?

I'll plan on leaving here around 3:30 or so, so lets say 4:30 at the school? Is the location of the DQ obvious? I can't recall where it is in Cardston.

The upper saint on Thurs 12 was fairly low (18cms). They are pulling out huge amounts for the canal. The first surf wave was small and gentle, but easy to stay on. Double trouble was ideal for spinning. The blender was too small and had too many rocks exposed for play. Don't expect too much white water.

Tim doesn't look to be running his company yet.

The belly looks reasonable, albeit a bit low for real good fun. The waterton might be a good choice. I would put in at the Campground before the park boundary. This will save an hour on the long trip.

Blair Goates is heading down the belly on Sat in pontoon. Email me if you want to contact him. cgoble@allstream.net

Looking at today's flows, the Castle looks best (38 cms vs 'preferred' of 25), while Waterton would be good (34 vs 30). Upper St. Mary would be quite low (18 vs 30), Belly (12 vs 15) and Crowsnest (10 vs 13) are slightly low.

Nice run today on the Crowsnest below the Falls 11.5 cms - lots of small surf.

Howdy,
If you haven't already done so, check out the PaddleFernie.com site. There is a forum on there that tends to be geared towards the Southeastern BC side of things. Keep checking in here for trips in this area and down into the states. I'm wondering though, what's an oc'er??
