Trips May 12th to May 18th

Post any trip proposals here. I will be up around the Calgary area this week. Perhaps near Radium or the Kicking Horse if the weather is nice.

I think Mark and I will be heading either up to the Kan or to the Kicking horse. It depends on the weather. We will be camping. You can try me on my cell 653-7447

Clay wanted to do some big volume stuff on the may long, and I would like to get away someplace new. WHat about heading down by lake Kookanoosa. Stonehills is there and the Yaak and Kootenai are good runs. I think you would enjoy the Yaak from the descriptions I have heard. The kootenai may be big, but luckily it is flowing quite low. There are other rivers on the way down. The weather should be good there, free camping nearby, some easy mountain biking on the logging roads, and libby is a pretty cool town.

Plus, it doen't involve carrying your kayak 4 km to go for a low volume tree infested boulder bash. I have concluded I would have to do those myself, or find some unsuspecting victim.

Upper St. made for a fun moonlight run last night at about 20 cms. It's amazing how many more rocks you can find to get high centered on when you can't see much of anything. The water wasn't too cold, and the weather was fantastic. The scenery was quite surreal with the dark foreground framed with a bright, star-lit night. It was awesome.

Double Trouble was more like Single Trouble at this flow, but the river-right side wave was still big enough to push up a fun tongue to ramp off of or kick around on. A boat sized boulder has dropped into the water just above Kimball Cliff into the middle of the current. At higher flows, it could become a decent new feature (but without an eddie anywhere near). Other than that and a couple of full blown trees pushed up into a couple of shallow spots, the Upper is the same old class II as always that is calling out to be run.

A good spot for the ORKA outreach program :-)
